About Us

Purrs & Beans (formerly BaristaCats Café in Auckland CBD) is New Zealand’s longest running cat café, now located on 188 Hinemoa Street, Birkenhead, in the heart of the ‘village with a view’.

We are a small, independently run, social enterprise and sanctuary to a clowder of very special resident rescue cats, all of whom are older and some with special needs. Because of this, admission into the cat area is restricted to 10+ as part of our SPCA welfare plan which we enforce strictly to ensure the safety and welfare of our cats.

To spend time with our fluffy gang, we do have an entry fee in place which contributes towards the cats’ care and helps us continue to run the premises which is their forever home. With limited capacity in each session so as not to overcrowd the cat area and overwhelm our cats, we strongly recommend booking online to guarantee your spot.

We also have a dedicated adoption room on site with rescue cats waiting to meet their forever families. If you are booked in to a general entry session, we will usually arrange quick visits so that guests can meet our fosters (subject to availability and if the cats are up for it, of course).

With a full beverage menu on offer as well as sweet snacks, you’ll also be able to enjoy a cuppa and a bite with your cat cuddles. Or if you’re short on time, you are more than welcome to just pop in for a takeaway coffee and say hi to the cats at the back before you go.

It is our goal to provide an enjoyable and enriching space for both humans and cats alike where we hope our guests not only have a purrific time but learn a little too. We believe we have created a tranquil space where our kitties can live their best lives and those in need of a bit of feline therapy can visit.
